Whatever Comes to Mind #3

Family Over Everything

What comes to mind today is my tattoo I got on my birthday. There is a lot of background behind why I got this tattoo and what it means to me. It may have seemed like a something I did on impulse to a lot of people and that's a little true. It's mostly not true because I've always wanted to get a tattoo, it just had to be something really REALLY meaningful to me. I used to think of getting a quote or something I live by, like a favorite bible verse. But on the day I decided I was going to do it, I had recently got an idea from a friend, one that I had previously thought of, and he sent me a picture of one he thought was nice. So I made up my mind and chose that design to get tattooed. My tattoo says Family Over Everything, across my chest, stretching from collarbone to collarbone. In my life family is something that means so much to me. Given that I was put into foster care at a very early age along with my sister, she is my closest family member. My past has a great effect on me, as it does to everybody. I barely know any of my relatives and most of the people I consider family are not blood relatives of mine. I took my time making friends growing up. I treasure friendship as much as I treasure family. My true close friends I've had for the past few years are like brothers and sisters to me. I see them as family. As I said before, my past has a great impact on me. My biological father most of the reason I was put in foster care and is non-existent in my life. Regardless of any foster parents I had, the hole in my life of growing up not knowing who my parents were could never be filled by anyone. Especially that of a father. So when I think of that I tell myself I will never let that happen if and whenever I have a kid. I promised myself that I will be a better father than my own when the time comes that I am a dad. I will never let anything come between me and my family. ANYTHING. So thats the reason behind the tattoo. I will always put my family over everything.

I think it's awesome that you put it in writing (permanent, at that). So many of us say we will "never" do this or "always" do that when we "grow up" and sometimes we forget. You will always be reminded and not be able to forget...even when the going gets tough. My son is a tattoo artist and I know the collar bone musta been painful. Props to you and thanks for sharing!
